Cruise Lingo 101: Key Terms to Know Before You Book and Board

Apr 5, 2024

If you’re new to cruising, the terminology can feel a bit like learning a new language. But don’t worry—you don’t need to speak “fluent cruise” to have an amazing time. Just knowing a few of the basics can help you book and board with confidence. Here’s a beginner-friendly cheat sheet to help you get familiar with the most common terms you’ll see and hear.

Stateroom

Your stateroom is your home base—aka your cabin or room. All three terms are used interchangeably depending on the cruise line.

Accommodation Categories:

  • Inside Cabin: No windows or views, but often the most affordable.
  • Oceanview: Includes a window or porthole so you can see outside.
  • Balcony (Verandah): Private outdoor space to enjoy fresh air and ocean views.
  • Obstructed View: A window or balcony partially blocked by equipment or lifeboats—sometimes offered at a discount.

Aft / Forward / Midship

  • Aft = Back of the ship. Quieter and may offer gorgeous views of the ship’s wake.
  • Forward = Front of the ship. Often near the spa or theater but can feel more motion.
  • Midship = The middle of the ship—often the most stable part (great if you’re prone to motion sickness).

Port vs. Starboard

  • Port Side = The left side of the ship when you’re facing the front.
  • Starboard Side = The right side when you’re facing the front.
Tip to remember: “Port” and “left” both have four letters!

Deck Plan

A layout or map (floors) of the ship showing what’s on each level—staterooms, restaurants, pools, lounges, and more. Higher decks usually cost more and have better views.

Muster Drill

A mandatory safety check before departure. You’ll check in at your muster station, usually near your stateroom, so you know where to go in case of emergency. These days it’s often quick and app-based.

Sea Day

A day when the ship doesn’t dock anywhere—you’re cruising all day! Perfect for lounging by the pool, exploring the ship, or enjoying onboard activities.

Tender Port

Some ports require the ship to anchor offshore. In that case, tenders (small boats) shuttle guests to and from land.

Port Day

The day your ship docks at a port and you can explore a new destination.

Embarkation / Disembarkation

  • Embarkation = Boarding the ship at the start of your cruise (also called departure day).
  • Disembarkation = Getting off the ship—either at a port stop or at the end of your cruise.
  • Sailaway = The festive moment when the ship departs from the port—don’t miss it!
  • All Aboard Time = The latest time you must be back on the ship before it leaves port. Don’t be late—the ship won’t wait!

Shore Excursion

Tours or activities offered at each port. You can book through the cruise line (easy and organized) or independently (often cheaper and more flexible).

Onboard Credit (OBC)

A little spending money provided by the cruise line or travel agent that you can use on the ship—for drinks, spa treatments, excursions, etc. It’s often included as part of a promotion or perk when booking.

Specialty Dining

Upscale or themed restaurants on board that cost extra (like sushi bars, steakhouses, or wine-paired dinners). Worth checking out for a special night!

  • Main Dining Room: The primary sit-down restaurant included in your cruise fare. Great for 3-course dinners!
  • My Time Dining / Anytime Dining: Flexible dining—come when you’re ready (may require reservations).
  • Set Dining: Assigned dining times and tablemates—great for routine and getting to know fellow cruisers.
