7 Go-To Baking Recipes: Family Favourites I Make on Repeat

Baking has always been one of those simple comforts in our home — the kind that fills the kitchen with good smells and brings everyone wandering in, asking, “What’s in the oven?” It’s also something I genuinely love doing because I feel calm and at ease in the kitchen when I’m baking. Cooking, on the other hand, is another story entirely. I’m usually a little frantic trying to get dinner on the table on a busy weeknight filled with work commitments and family extracurricular activities.

I’m not someone who creates my own baking recipes from scratch, but I am fiercely loyal to the ones that work. The ones that disappear before I can pack some up for the kids’ lunchboxes. The ones that help me use up that half-open bag of chocolate chips, the extra yogurt lingering in the fridge, or those bananas that are officially past their prime.

These aren’t my personal favourite treat — I find them a little on the heavier side. I tend to gravitate toward lighter (though admittedly sweeter) desserts like pastéis de nata, which I still haven’t attempted at home. That said, my kids absolutely love these egg tarts, so they’ve earned a permanent spot in our baking rotation.

What I appreciate most about this recipe is how adaptable it is. I take a shortcut by buying ready-made tart shells and focus on making the silky custard, slightly eggy filling. They bake up beautifully, portion easily, and feel just special enough without being overly complicated.

Milk tart is a traditional South African dessert I grew up with, and it’s one of those tastes that instantly reminds me of my time “back home”. There are many variations, but I’m firmly in the crust-lover camp — even though my husband prefers it crustless. As the baker, I get the final say. 😉

To keep things simple, I usually use a ready-made crust. Years ago, I loved making this with a shortbread tart shell, but since that’s been harder to find in Canadian grocery stores, I’ve switched to graham wafer shells with great success. It’s not quite the same, but it still tastes wonderful.

This is a recipe we’ve been making for years, starting with the classic sour cream pound cake and eventually branching out into this lemon-poppy seed version — which quickly became a favourite too.

It’s so reliable and easy that even my 11-year-old son has made it on his own. To this day, he can nearly bake it from memory, which says a lot about how approachable this recipe is.
